Microsoft had tried to build their new data center in Washington state, but they couldn’t get the tax breaks they wanted. Their new 1.1 billion dollar data center project was sent to Iowa because they could get special tax breaks there, including lower utility rates. That saves them more than $20 million in just sales tax by moving to Iowa.
