What is SQL?

When you are first learning about databases, one of the first questions that you are asked is about SQL. You learn that SQL is an ANSI standard computer language for dealing with relational databases. It was first called SEQUEL by IBM, but the name was later abbreviated as SQL. SEQUEL was an abbreviation for Structured English QUery Language. Most database management systems use some form of SQL for interacting with their databases.
