Microsoft Support for Virtual SQL Server Instances

If you have a SQL Server virtualized on Windows, you should verify the configuration of hardware and software meets Microsoft support requirements, or they could refuse to provide support. In the support article here, they lists the requirements for Microsoft support in your virtualized environment, and provide information as to the approved configurations that are supported.

You should verify with your vendor that their proposed hardware/software combination has passed the Microsoft Windows Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP) before you sign the check. You’ll also want to verify any changes to the configuration after purchase don’t invalidate the certification. Microsoft says:

Microsoft provides technical support for SQL Server 2005 and later versions for the following supported hardware virtualization environments:

    • Windows Server 2008 and later versions with Hyper-V
    • Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 and later versions
    • Configurations that are validated through the Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP).

Microsoft may provide limited or no technical support for the following environments:

    • Any version of SQL Server earlier than SQL Server 2005 (such as SQL Server 2000) that is running on any virtualization vendor or configuration.
    • Any non-Microsoft virtualization software that is not a configuration that is validated through the SVVP program

You can search for your solution in the Microsoft database of approved configurations here.

  1. Hello! I know this is kinda off topic but I’d figured I’d ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest authoring a blog article or vice-versa? My website goes over a lot of the same topics as yours and I think we could greatly benefit from each other. If you happen to be interested feel free to send me an e-mail. I look forward to hearing from you! Awesome blog by the way!
